Coping with Anxiety and Stress

  • Take a break from the news and social media. While it is important to get the facts to care for yourself and your loved ones, refrain from filling your time and thoughts constantly with what might and could happen.
  • Breathe. Stop what you are doing and take a moment to focus on your breathing. Take four breaths in and four out for 5 minutes. This will slow your heart rate and bring calm.
  • Go for a walk or do a few minutes of stretching such as dropping your shoulders and doing a gentle neck roll or massaging your hands.
  • Write down what makes you anxious; this can help to get the thoughts out of your head.
  • Engage in a hobby or read a book.
  • Spend time in play whether with your children, other adults in your home, or alone.
  • Talk to someone.
  • Find an opportunity to laugh.
  • Be realistic about what you need; refrain from “hoard buying”.
  • Rest.

Being Compassionate to Yourself

  • Be patient and kind to yourself and your emotions. It can be difficult, but not impossible, to change feelings of distress.
  • Find something to be hopeful and optimistic about, as minor as it may seem.
  • Realize that you are not alone.
  • Practice mindfulness. What can you find joy in at this moment?
  • Give yourself praise.

Being Compassionate to Others

  • Listen. • Do an act of kindness.
  • Check on a neighbor.
  • Donate needed items or funds to organizations providing food and personal items to those who are homebound or in need.
  • Remember that everyone is carrying a burden, whether emotional, financial, work-related, or concern for a loved one.
  • Write letters, draw pictures, or send cards to those who are homebound, such as those in assisted living or nursing homes and cannot currently receive visitors.
